N-Acetyl-L-cysteine can increase the free radical scavenging capacity of the cell pool and is also a mucolytic agent. Its mechanism of action is that it can break the disulfide bonds (-S-S-) of mucin peptide bonds, causing the mucin to become small molecule peptide chains, thus relaxing and clearing the viscosity of sputum.
