1.What Is Silymarin?
Silymarin is a kind of dihydroflavanol compound, has the function of resisting liver poisoning, protecting liver cells and so on, can be used as bile excretory agent.  It has good curative effect to the liver diseases such as acute, diffuse hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, toxic liver injury in metabolism, gallstone and the recurrent pain caused by gallstone and cholangitis. 
2.How Silymarin Works
Silymarin can protect liver cell membrane by preventing lipid peroxidation and maintaining cell membrane fluidity.  It also inhibits the superoxide anion release of neutrophils to reduce inflammatory cell-induced hepatocyte damage.  Other studies have shown that silybin can increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) expression in lymphocytes of mice with chronic alcoholic liver disease, and thus has an antioxidant effect.  It has also been reported that silybin can reduce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA).
