Rutin

Rutin, also called rutoside, quercetin-3-O-rutinoside and sophorin, is the glycoside between the flavonol quercetin and the disaccharide rutinose (α -L-rhamnopyranosyl-(16))-β -D-glucopyranose). Rutin is a bioflavonoid, or plant pigment, that is found in certain vegetables and fruits. Apples are full of rutin. Buckwheat, most citrus, figs, and both black and green tea also contain rutin.

1.What is Rutin?

Rutin is a flavonol compound rutin quercetin in the rue glucoside, is a kind of flavonoids extracted from plants. In the flower bud of Sophora japonica, the Rutin content can reach more than 20%, which is the main raw material for the extraction of rutin from the pharmaceutical industry in China.

Rutin can be decomposed by strong acidity and alkalinity. The color is unstable in alkaline food and has the antioxidant capacity. In ethanol, it can improve the light resistance of pigment, prevent the gradual disappearance or change of fragrance, and improve its antioxidant capacity with vitamin E.

2.How Rutin Works?

Rutin is not an especially large flavonoid, but specific parts of its molecule interact with different systems in the body, such as the brain, heart, or blood vessels.

For example, rutin contains two bound sugar molecules, which enhance its antioxidant effects on the brain.

Overall, rutin acts by:

Protecting brain cells from damage.

Blocking inflammatory enzymes (phospholipase A2), similar to corticosteroids but without the side effects.

Reducing oxidative stress and free radicals.

Safely lowering high blood pressure, affecting similar pathways as drugs used for high blood pressure (blocks ACE).

Boosting acetylcholine (by clocking the enzyme that degrades it, AChE).Binding to and neutralizing toxic compounds that build up in the body if exposed to radiation

Relaxing blood vessels
