1.What is Lutein&Zeaxanthin?

Lutein from Latin luteus meaning "yellow") is a xanthophyll and one of 600 known naturally occurring carotenoids. Lutein is synthesized only by plants.  Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid found in the human eye. The other two carotenoids your eyes contain are lutein and meso-zeaxanthin.

Zeaxanthin is concentrated in the center of the retina, while lutein is found in the peripheral regions of the retina. Together, they form the macular pigment of the eye. Both offer antioxidant benefits, although zeaxanthin is the more effective antioxidant.

2.How Lutein&Zeaxanthin Works

When we eat foods high in lutein or take it in supplement form, it’s believed to be pretty easily transported around the body, especially to the parts of the eyes called the macula and the lens.  In fact, there are more than 600 different types of carotenoids found in nature, but only about 20 make their way into the eyes.  Of those 20, zeaxanthin and lutein are the only two that are deposited in high quantities into the macular portion of the eyes.

All pigments are good at absorbing specific wavelengths of light, which is why they appear the color that they do. Zeaxanthin is especially good at absorbing blue light. Blue light emits a high energy and therefore is the most damaging light that enters our eyes. Maintaining adequate concentrations of zeaxanthin can help to protect your retina and thus your vision.
